Championing Justice and Health Equity: TMSI’s Stand Against Unsafe Abortion Practices
At The Marginalised Safe Initiative (TMSI), we believe in a world where every woman regardless of her occupation, socioeconomic status, or identity has the right to bodily autonomy, access to accurate health information, and dignified healthcare services. In line with this, we are proud to release our latest Position Paper, which focuses on the pressing issue of unsafe abortion practices among sex workers and marginalized women in Nigeria.
This position paper reflects months of research, community engagement, and policy dialogue. It shines a light on the barriers that prevent some of the most vulnerable groups in our society from accessing safe reproductive healthcare—including stigma, criminalization, lack of information, and limited availability of youth-friendly and non-judgmental services.
Why This Matters
Unsafe abortion remains one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Nigeria, and the burden is disproportionately borne by those already pushed to the margins sex workers, poor women, and gender minorities. At TMSI, we recognize that ignoring their realities only worsens the cycle of inequality and harm.
Through this position paper, we are advocating for:
•Increased access to safe and legal abortion services, particularly for those most at risk.
•Inclusion of marginalized voices in policy-making spaces.
•Comprehensive sexuality education that empowers women and girls with knowledge about their bodies and rights.
•Strengthening accountability mechanisms to reduce abuse and ensure health systems serve everyone equally.
Our Call to Action
We urge stakeholders including government bodies, healthcare providers, legal institutions, and civil society organizations to engage with this position paper not as a critique, but as a tool for reflection and reform. Together, we can create a health system that prioritizes compassion over condemnation, support over stigma.
