The third phase of the Climate Workshop was held at Alimosho Grammar School, successfully drawing 250 participants, including students, teachers, and school heads of departments. The workshop was designed to foster environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among young learners and educators.
The session started off on the assembly ground of the school after their morning assembly. The session which was anchored by TMSI Program Manager focused on critical environmental topics essential for community development and waste management. The students were asked what they understood by waste management and after several responses, they went further to use a module adopted from Sierra Leone’s Environment Protection Agency Solid Waste Management Training Manual For Schools (https://healtheducationlibrary.dhse.gov.sl/index.php/files/473/MINISTORY-OF-HEALTH/207/SOLID-WASTE-MANAGEMENT-TRAINING-MANUAL-FOR-SCHOOLS-001.pdf). The session comprehensively covered the dangers of improper waste disposal, emphasizing the long-term environmental and health impacts of poor waste management practices. The discussion also highlighted the importance of maintaining functional drainage systems and the urgent need to preserve local infrastructure to prevent environmental degradation.

The interactive nature of the workshop was particularly noteworthy. Following the presentation, the students engaged in a vibrant and insightful question-and-answer session where they asked questions surrounding proper methods to dispose of waste when leaving in hard-to-reach areas. Students and teachers demonstrated remarkable curiosity and critical thinking, posing thought-provoking questions about waste management and environmental sustainability. The session allowed for comprehensive responses, ensuring that participants gained deep insights into environmental conservation strategies.
The head teacher alongside TMSI’s Program Manager and Strategic Communications Officer presented a certificate of confirmation to the student’s head boy and girl, signifying that the school had become a member of our #School4Change movement. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from the student representatives, the head boy and head girl, who expressed profound gratitude for the impactful session. To substantiate our commitment to environmental sustainability, TMSI donated 5 medium-sized waste bins to the school. This practical contribution symbolizes our dedication to supporting institutional efforts in implementing sustainable waste management practices.

This phase of the workshop represents another significant milestone in TMSI’s ongoing mission to empower communities and institutions. By providing knowledge and practical tools, we are actively working towards creating cleaner, more sustainable environments. The engagement of students, teachers, and local government representatives underscores the importance of collaborative approaches to environmental education and conservation.
