The Rebel with a Broom project culminated in a powerful and thought-provoking showcase held on November 26, 2024, at Galari, an art gallery in Ikeja, Lagos. This event was the final phase of a multifaceted initiative aimed at addressing waste management challenges in Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, through creative advocacy and community engagement. The project’s journey included three workshops designed to educate community members about waste management, the airing of a radio drama series titled Madam Felicity and Her Broom Sisters, which spotlighted the struggles of female street sweepers, and the commissioning and installation of fifteen murals in strategic locations across Alimosho. These murals, unified by the theme “Rebel with a Broom,” served as both art and advocacy, highlighting the resilience of unsung heroes and calling for collective environmental responsibility.

The planning of the mural showcase was not without challenges. Securing a venue within budget proved difficult, with many art galleries charging far beyond what the project could afford. With the assistance of the project’s art curator, Galari was secured as a fitting location to host the event. Once the venue was finalized, preparations began in earnest. This included commissioning a photographer to document the murals, installing mural replicas in the gallery, and coordinating logistical details to ensure a seamless event. On the day of the showcase, the TMSI team worked tirelessly to ensure everything was in place, while accommodating Crtve Development’s request for a recording session detailing the project’s challenges, technical know-how, and outcomes.
The showcase commenced with an opening speech by the art curator, who highlighted the significance of art as a powerful tool for societal change. A representative from TMSI then provided a comprehensive overview of the project, detailing its objectives, phases, and impact. Attendees, including community members, artists, representatives from LAWMA, and art enthusiasts, explored the mural exhibits, deciphering the messages behind each artwork and engaging in meaningful discussions about waste management and environmental advocacy. Artists Dharel and Idris offered deeper insights into their creative processes, sharing the inspiration behind their murals and the challenges they faced during execution.
A panel discussion titled The Power of Art in Social Change was a highlight of the event. Moderated by Benita Adelaja, TMSI’s Strategic Communications Officer, the panel featured three distinguished speakers: Mrs. Adewunmi, the Director of LAWMA Academy; Mr. Togo, Crtve Development’s Programs Lead; and Dharel, one of the local artists. The discussion explored how art serves as a catalyst for advocacy, uniting communities, NGOs, and government agencies in addressing societal challenges. The session was both insightful and interactive, with audience members contributing questions and suggestions. One of the most impactful moments came when Mrs. Adewunmi extended an invitation to TMSI and the artists to collaborate on LAWMA Academy’s waste-to-art initiative, which had already been piloted in primary and secondary schools across Lagos.

Conclusion
The showcase achieved its primary goal of raising awareness about improper waste disposal practices while celebrating the resilience of Alimosho’s community sweepers. It provided a platform for networking, collaboration, and inspiration, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to environmental justice. Despite time and budget constraints, the event was a resounding success, demonstrating the transformative power of art in driving social change. In conclusion, the Rebel with a Broom showcase served as a call to action, uniting stakeholders, artists, and community members in a shared mission to create a cleaner and more sustainable Alimosho. The event not only amplified the voices of unsung heroes but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations and initiatives aimed at fostering community resilience and environmental justice.
